Goal and cards

Two players receive ten cards each. Form sets of three or four equal ranks, or runs of at least three consecutive cards in one suit. Ace is low: A–2–3 is a run, Q–K–A is not. Cards outside melds are deadwood; keep their total low.

Drawing and discarding

Draw one card from the stock or the top of the discard pile, then discard one. Melds stay in your hand. The engine finds the arrangement with the lowest deadwood automatically; you do not lay combinations on the table.

Deadwood values

Ace counts 1, jack, queen and king 10, and other cards their face value. A card can belong to only one meld. For example, a set of sevens and a 5–6–7 run cannot both use the same seven.

Knocking and gin

When discarding, you may knock to end the deal if at most 10 deadwood points remain. Zero is gin. After an ordinary knock, the opponent may reduce deadwood by adding matching cards to your melds; the engine calculates this automatically. No such layoffs are allowed after gin. Gin-only mode permits ending only with gin and sets the match target to 150.

Scoring and finish

Gin scores 25 plus the opponent's deadwood. After a knock, you score the difference if the opponent has more deadwood. If they have equal or less, they instead score 25 plus the difference in their favour. If two or fewer stock cards remain after an ordinary discard, the deal ends without points. Further deals continue to the selected target, normally 100.
