Checkers

Draughts on 8×8. Men capture backwards, kings fly, and you must take the most.

Goal and setup

Two players have 12 men each on the dark squares of an 8×8 board. White moves first. Win by capturing all of the opponent's pieces or leaving them with no legal move. Select your piece, then its destination.

Ordinary moves

A man moves one empty square diagonally forward. A king moves diagonally in any direction, any number of empty squares.

Captures

A man captures an adjacent opponent by jumping onto the empty square just beyond it, forwards or backwards. A king captures from a distance: it travels along the diagonal to an opponent's piece and lands on any empty square beyond it. If another capture is available after landing, the sequence continues with the same piece; click each square of a longer route.

Compulsory capture

Capturing is compulsory, and you must choose the sequence that takes the most pieces (a king counts the same as a man). Captured pieces are removed only when the move ends: during a sequence you cannot pass through them or capture them twice.

Kings

A man that ends its move on the far row becomes a king. If it reaches the far row in the middle of a sequence and can capture further, it carries on as a man and is not crowned.

Ending and settings

Having no pieces or no legal move loses. A draw occurs after 15 moves by each player with kings only and no capture. Players may also agree a draw or resign. Taking back requires the opponent's consent and the takeback setting to be enabled. A random opening starts from a position reached by several legal moves.
